Job Description: School Nurse
Position Overview:
The School Nurse is responsible for promoting and maintaining the health and well-being of students within the educational environment. This role requires providing direct medical care, managing health records, implementing health education programs, and collaborating with educators, parents, and medical professionals to ensure a safe and healthy school community.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver high-quality nursing care to students, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of illnesses and injuries.
2. Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and immunizations according to established protocols and regulations.
3. Monitor and manage students with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, and allergies, in collaboration with parents and healthcare providers.
4. Develop and maintain accurate and confidential health records and documentation, including medical histories, treatment plans, and incident reports.
5. Conduct health screenings and assessments to identify health concerns and provide appropriate referrals for further evaluation and treatment.
6. Provide health education to students, parents, and staff on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, disease prevention, and overall wellness.
7. Collaborate with teachers and administrators to develop and implement individualized health plans and accommodations for students with special needs.
8. Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide first aid and CPR as needed.
9. Establish and maintain effective communication with parents, guardians, and healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care and address health-related concerns.
10. Stay up-to-date with current healthcare practices, policies, and regulations, and participate in professional development activities to enhance nursing knowledge and skills.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.
2. Current and active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
3. Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in a pediatric or school setting.
4. Solid understanding of nursing principles, practices, and procedures.
5. Proficient in conducting health assessments, administering medications, and providing emergency care.
6. Knowledge of common childhood illnesses, chronic conditions, and appropriate treatment protocols.
7. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with students, parents, educators, and healthcare professionals.
8. Excellent organizational and documentation skills to maintain accurate health records and reports.
9. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
10. Demonstrate empathy, compassion, and patience in working with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
